André Lotterer, a three-time Le Mans 24-hour race winner, shared an interesting detail about his debut in Formula 1, where he competed in the only race he participated in. He revealed that in 2014, when he made his debut in the racing circus, he paid just 1 euro for the seat, as there was a clause in Kamui Kobayashi’s contract that said only a paying driver can replace him. Colin Kolles, who allowed Lotterer to debut at Le Mans in 2009, called him as the new team principal of Caterham and wanted him to race at Spa, as he was familiar with the track and had a chance in the rain. Lotterer paid 1 euro for the contract and the seat was his. The Caterham team had its last season in F1 in 2014 and Lotterer did not score any points during his participation. He quickly adapted to the car and even beat his teammate in qualifying. After the race ended due to an electronic failure in the first lap, Lotterer was offered to race in Monza, but he declined as he wanted a full weekend or nothing. Later, he was approached again for the season finale in Abu Dhabi, but by that time he was happy with long-distance racing and declined the offer. Lotterer made this decision because he did not want to race at the back of the pack in F1.
