Jüri Vips, the newest driver in the IndyCar series, has been working tirelessly to make a comeback since the end of last year. A scandal erupted last year when the Red Bull junior used a racist expression during a live broadcast and was subsequently dismissed from the Red Bull academy. Despite finishing the F2 season as per pre-existing contracts, he lost any chance of an F1 seat. Since then, the Estonian racer has been trying to establish himself in the IndyCar series and got the opportunity to compete in the final two races of the year for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Before his first American race, he was asked about the changes he has made since the incident that shattered his career on Twitch. Vips explained that after the incident, he asked his team, Hitech, to enroll him in a course to understand what is offensive and what is not. He realized that he made a huge mistake without even knowing it and thought it was just swearing. Vips revealed that he attended two training sessions on the subject, one in the United Kingdom and one in the United States, to meet the expectations of his new team. Bobby Rahal, the team owner, acknowledged Vips’s past but shared the viewpoint of Hitech, who did not immediately dismiss him. Rahal stated that although they considered the incident a mistake, they did not believe it defined Vips as a person and allowed him to continue racing for them throughout the year. Vips completed the same course in the United States that the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson underwent after using the same word as Vips. Rahal emphasized that it was regrettable that Vips made such a mistake but admired his efforts to rectify it and continues to do so.
