The United States has had a significant presence in the MotoGP championship since the 1960s, but they haven’t enjoyed the same level of success in recent decades. They haven’t had a team in the premier class since Team Roberts withdrew in 2007, but now Trackhouse Racing is going to fill that void. Currently, the United States only has one Moto2 team and two riders in that category. Despite this, Pitbull’s team is not starting from scratch, as the United States has a glorious past in the history of the MotoGP championship. They are third overall in terms of championship titles in the premier class, with seven riders winning a total of fifteen titles. Their dominance came between 1978 and 1993, with the likes of Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, and Kevin Schwantz. Since then, they have only had two champions: Kenny Roberts Jr. in 2000 and Nicky Hayden in 2006. Interestingly, American riders haven’t been as successful in the other two categories, with no champions in the smallest class and only two in the intermediate category. The MotoGP championship made its debut in the United States in 1961, but there was a long hiatus in American races until 1990. The championship returned to the United States in 1990 at Laguna Seca, and the last premier class race was held there in 2013. The smaller categories had already finished their California adventure earlier, with six races for the 250cc bikes (1988-1994) and two races for the 125cc class (1993-1994). In 2013, there were races at both Laguna Seca and the Circuit of the Americas in Texas.
